March 2 brought crisp air, competitive focus, and one very clear objective at Poppy Hills Golf Course: earn a spot on the team.

The Poppy Hills Club Zone Championship Qualifier — an individual stroke play event — tested consistency, course management, and a little bit of early-season nerve. With Zone Championship spots on the line, every stroke mattered.

And now, we officially know who will represent Poppy Hills this summer.

Men’s Team Qualifiers

Congratulations to our Men’s Team:

  • Peter Broderick
  • Douglas Bargenquast
  • Gene Aso
  • Matthew Eason

Poppy Hills will send one men’s team comprised of the low net players from each flight along with the low gross performer — a balance of steady handicap play and standout scoring ability.

These four earned it the right way: individual stroke play, no hiding, no partners to lean on. Just your game, your decisions, and 18 holes of championship-caliber golf.

Women’s Team Qualifiers

Representing Poppy Hills on the women’s side:

  • Pamela Carlson
  • Anita Gonzalez
  • Beverley Wooley
  • Karen Medalen

For the women’s team, the format selects the top three net scores plus the low gross player — rewarding both precision and performance under pressure.

Depth. Balance. Competitive grit. This group brings all three.

What’s Next

Both teams will compete at the NCGA South Coast Zone Championship on June 8 & 9.

Zone play is where club pride shows up in full force. It’s competitive, it’s strategic, and it’s one of the most exciting ways to represent Poppy Hills beyond our own fairways.

We’ll be cheering them on every step of the way.

Why This Event Matters

The Zone Qualifier is more than just a tournament. It’s a measuring stick. Early March golf asks questions:

  • Is your offseason work paying off?
  • Can you stay patient when the greens are firm?
  • Can you grind through a mid-round wobble?

This group answered yes.

Up Next: Two Person 6/6/6 – April 8

If the Zone Qualifier lit a competitive spark, keep it going.

Our next Poppy Hills Club Tournament is the Two Person 6/6/6 on Wednesday, April 8.

Three formats. One round. Endless strategy.

Grab a partner, map out your game plan, and get on the tee sheet early — these always fill quickly.

To everyone who competed on March 2: thank you for bringing the energy. Club tournaments are the heartbeat of Poppy Hills, and the standard keeps rising.

June can’t come soon enough.
